The Yacht Devices YDNB-07R is a programmable NMEA 2000 and CAN bridge designed to connect two separate physical marine networks and make them operate as a single logical network. The YDNB-07R version is equipped with NMEA 2000 connectors compatible with Raymarine SeaTalk NG on both CAN interfaces.

The bridge can forward, filter, modify and route CAN and NMEA 2000 messages between its CAN1 and CAN2 interfaces. It can be used to extend large networks, isolate equipment, correct transmitted values, improve compatibility between devices from different generations and create custom gateways between NMEA 2000 and other CAN-based systems.

NMEA 2000 Network Expansion

The YDNB-07R can be used to bypass physical limits of a standard NMEA 2000 installation. The manufacturer specifies a maximum network length of 100 m with regular cable or 250 m with heavy or mid-type cable, with up to 50 physical devices on one network segment.

By separating a large installation into multiple physical segments connected through bridges, a network with an address capacity of 252 can be expanded to approximately 250 physical devices.

Filtering and Device Isolation

The bridge allows selected equipment or messages to be isolated between network segments. Filters can be used to block all traffic from a device or only selected messages while forwarding the remaining data.

CAN Interface Speeds

The CAN2 interface can be configured for different CAN bus speeds, allowing integration with non-NMEA 2000 CAN networks. The CAN1 interface remains fixed at the standard NMEA 2000 speed of 250 kbps.

Message Forwarding Performance

For messages that do not match a filter, the manufacturer specifies a reception-to-transmission delay of within 100 microseconds, even when the maximum number of 20 filters is configured.

The device includes software queues for 100 incoming and 100 outgoing messages, with a maximum message lifetime in the queue of 50 milliseconds.

Diagnostic Logging

The bridge can record CAN traffic and program runtime information to a MicroSD card for diagnostics and development.

Installation Notes

• Never connect both connectors of the bridge to the same NMEA 2000 or CAN network
• Each NMEA 2000 network segment requires proper termination
• Both network segments must be powered when used as a bridge
• The device microcontroller is powered from the CAN1 interface
• CAN2 can remain disconnected for applications that only require CAN1 data processing
• Install the device in a dry location
• Switch off network power before making connections
