Yacht Devices YDOG-01N Outboard Engine Gateway with NMEA 2000 Micro Male Connector for Petrol Engines
The Yacht Devices YDOG-01N is an Outboard Gateway designed for petrol engines that do not have a digital engine interface. It converts ignition pulse information into NMEA 2000 engine data and provides compatible multifunction displays and instruments with engine RPM, engine hours and alternator voltage measured at the NMEA 2000 interface.
The gateway can also use information from compatible NMEA 2000 temperature and pressure sensors and retransmit this data as engine parameters including coolant temperature, coolant pressure, engine oil temperature, engine oil pressure, boost pressure and fuel pressure.

Engine RPM Detection
The YDOG-01N detects ignition impulses without making an electrical connection to the engine ignition system. Its sensing wire works as an antenna that detects pulses sent to a spark plug.
For installation, the sensing wire should normally be wrapped 3–5 times around the spark plug wire and secured with suitable tape. Increasing the number of turns increases signal strength but can also increase electrical noise.
- No electrical connection to the spark plug wire is required
- Typical installation: 3–5 turns around the spark plug wire
- Sensing wire can be shortened if required
- Sensing wire can be extended, although additional length can increase noise pickup
RPM Divider Configuration
The number of ignition impulses per engine revolution depends on engine and ignition system design. The gateway therefore provides an adjustable RPM divider from 0.5 to 8.
Engine / Ignition Type Typical RPM Divider Most modern 2-stroke twin-cylinder outboard motors 0.5 Classic 2-stroke engines 1 4-stroke engines with CDI 1 Classic 4-stroke engines with ignition distributor 2
The factory RPM divider setting is 1.
Pulse Counting Algorithms
The gateway includes four signal-processing algorithms for different ignition pulse rates and noise conditions.
- Algorithm 1: factory setting, optimized for up to 15,000 pulses per minute with stronger high-frequency noise filtering
- Algorithm 2: supports up to 70,000 pulses per minute and is recommended for RPM divider settings of 3 or higher
- Algorithms 3 and 4: experimental algorithms
External NMEA 2000 Sensors
The YDOG-01N can receive temperature and pressure data from external NMEA 2000 sensors and use this information as engine data. The same data can also be used to generate engine alerts.
- Coolant temperature
- Coolant pressure
- Engine oil temperature
- Engine oil pressure
- Boost pressure
- Fuel pressure
Programmable Warnings and Indicators
The gateway can be configured to generate engine warnings and charging indications on compatible NMEA 2000 displays.
Function Available Setting Overspeed warning 50–12,700 RPM or OFF High temperature warning 90–344°C or OFF Low voltage warning 8.0–33.4 V or OFF Battery charging indicator 8.0–33.4 V or OFF
The factory low-voltage warning setting is 11.5 V, while the factory charging indicator threshold is 13.6 V.
Hidden Button Configuration
Basic installation settings can be changed using the hidden button on the device without a PC.
- Engine number: 0–3
- RPM divider: 0.5 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8
- Pulse-counting algorithm: 1–4
- Factory settings reset
Engine number 0 is the factory setting and is used for a single engine or port engine. Engine number 1 is used for the starboard engine in a twin-engine installation.

Installation
The YDOG-01N is powered directly from the NMEA 2000 network and can be connected directly to the network backbone without a drop cable. The device should be installed in a dry location protected from water, rain and spray.
When installed inside a sufficiently large outboard engine, the gateway should be securely fastened, ventilated, isolated from hot surfaces and protected from possible water, oil and petrol spray.
