Yacht Devices YDEG-04R SeaTalk NG Engine Gateway for Volvo Penta, J1939, SmartCraft and BRP CAN
The Yacht Devices YDEG-04R is an Engine Gateway designed to connect compatible engine networks to an NMEA 2000 marine electronics system through a Raymarine SeaTalk NG-compatible network connector. It supports Volvo Penta systems, J1939 engines, SmartCraft networks used by Mercury and MerCruiser, and BRP CAN engines.
Depending on the connected engine controller, protocol and installed sensors, the gateway can transfer operating data such as engine RPM, working hours, temperatures, battery information, fuel data, transmission parameters, warnings and alarms to compatible chart plotters, multifunction displays and other NMEA 2000 equipment.

Volvo Penta Compatibility
The YDEG-04R supports all Volvo Penta EVC versions covered by the manufacturer documentation, including EVC-A, EVC-B, EVC-C, EVC-D and EVC-E. It also supports D1 and D2 engines with MDI, EDC III / EMS2, EDC IV, gasoline EFI engines with MEFI4B or MEFI5 controllers, and Volvo Penta EGC gasoline engines.
The gateway is compatible with most Volvo Penta engines manufactured since 2004 and with some earlier engines. For Volvo Penta KAD, TAMD, EDC I, EDC II and J1708/J1587 systems, another gateway model is required.
Volvo Penta Installation
On compatible EVC-B and later systems, the gateway can be connected in-line with an EVC tachometer through its built-in 6-pin Y-connector, to a compatible HCU Multilink port, or to a Multilink Hub.
If several engines are connected to one common engine network, a single gateway can transfer data from multiple engines. The device supports up to eight engines on one joined engine network.
J1939 Support
The gateway supports engines and engine networks using the J1939 protocol. J1939 operates on a CAN bus at 250 kbps. Dedicated adaptor cables can be required for selected Caterpillar, Yanmar and other J1939 applications.
With factory settings, the gateway receives data from the J1939 network without transmitting data back to the engine network. Selected NMEA 2000 data forwarding to the engine network can be enabled through configuration when required.
SmartCraft Support
The YDEG-04R supports SmartCraft networks used by Mercury and MerCruiser engines. Connection requires a compatible 10-pin SmartCraft adaptor Y-cable.
- Supports up to 4 SmartCraft engines on one network
- Supports SmartCraft engine and transmission data
- Supports up to 2 fuel tanks per SmartCraft engine
- SmartCraft support is enabled through gateway configuration
BRP CAN Support
The gateway supports BRP CAN engines and can handle up to two BRP engines on a network. Most BRP engines use a 500 kbps CAN speed, while some models operate at 250 kbps.
- Engine speed
- Engine hours
- Engine temperature
- Boost pressure
- Keyswitch battery voltage
- Fuel rate
- Fuel tank level
- Engine warnings
System Capacity
Data Type Maximum Supported Engines Up to 8 Transmissions Up to 8 Batteries Up to 8 Fuel tanks Up to 10
Fuel Tank Configuration
The gateway can transfer fuel level data from supported engine networks to NMEA 2000. Fuel tank capacity can be configured individually, and the device supports 12-point calibration for compatible tank level data.
MicroSD Configuration and Diagnostics
The YDEG-04R includes a MicroSD card slot for device configuration, firmware updates and engine-network data recording. Configuration is performed using a text file named YDEG.TXT stored in the root directory of the card.
- Configuration through a text file
- Firmware updates through MicroSD
- Engine-network data recording
- Diagnostic data capture
- Supports FAT, FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 formatted cards
Installation Notes
- Connects directly to the NMEA 2000 / SeaTalk NG backbone without a drop cable
- Requires a dry installation location
- Some engine applications require a dedicated adaptor cable
- Engine connector wiring must be verified before connection
- Engine network power must be switched off during installation
- Designed for use with 12 V and 24 V engine networks
