Yacht Devices YDEG-04N NMEA 2000 Engine Gateway with Micro Male Connector for Volvo Penta, J1939, SmartCraft and BRP CAN
The Yacht Devices YDEG-04N is an Engine Gateway designed to connect compatible engine networks to an NMEA 2000 marine electronics network. It supports Volvo Penta systems, J1939 engines, SmartCraft systems used by Mercury and MerCruiser, and BRP CAN engines such as BRP Rotax.
Engine data received by the gateway can be made available to compatible chart plotters, multifunction displays and other NMEA 2000 equipment. Depending on the engine controller, protocol and installed sensors, available information can include engine revolutions, operating hours, temperatures, electrical data, fuel information, engine load, transmission parameters, warnings and alarms.

NMEA 2000 Connector Compatibility
The YDEG-04N version is equipped with an NMEA 2000 Micro Male-style connector. It is also compatible with DeviceNet Micro Male and Garmin NMEA 2000 Male connection formats.
Volvo Penta Compatibility
The gateway supports all versions of Volvo Penta EVC covered by the manufacturer documentation, including EVC-A, EVC-B, EVC-C, EVC-D and EVC-E. It also supports D1 and D2 engines with MDI, EDC III / EMS2, EDC IV, supported EFI gasoline engines with MEFI4B or MEFI5 controllers, and Volvo Penta EGC gasoline engines.
Most compatible Volvo Penta engines manufactured since 2006 use EVC-B or later versions. The gateway is also compatible with many engines manufactured since 2004 and some earlier engines.
Volvo Penta Installation
On compatible EVC-B and later systems, the gateway can commonly be connected in-line with an EVC tachometer using its built-in 6-pin Y-connector, to a compatible HCU Multilink port, or to a Multilink Hub.
If multiple engines are joined to a single compatible engine network, one YDEG-04 can transfer data from multiple engines. The gateway supports up to eight engines on a network.
J1939 Support
The YDEG-04 supports engines and engine networks using the J1939 standard. J1939 operates as a CAN bus at 250 kbps, and adaptor cables are available for selected engines including Caterpillar and Yanmar applications.
With factory settings, the gateway only receives data from the J1939 engine network and does not transmit data back to it. Forwarding selected NMEA 2000 data to the engine network can be enabled through configuration when required.
SmartCraft Support
The gateway supports SmartCraft networks used by Mercury and MerCruiser engines. Connection is made through a compatible 10-pin SmartCraft adaptor Y-cable.
- Supports up to 4 SmartCraft engines on one network
- Supports SmartCraft engine and transmission data
- Supports up to two fuel tanks per SmartCraft engine
- SmartCraft protocol support is enabled through device configuration
BRP CAN Support
The gateway supports BRP CAN engines and can handle up to two BRP engines on one network. Most BRP CAN engines use a 500 kbps CAN bus speed, although some models use 250 kbps.
- Engine speed
- Engine hours
- Engine temperature
- Boost pressure
- Keyswitch battery voltage
- Fuel rate
- Fuel tank level
- Engine warnings
System Capacity
Data Type Maximum Supported Engines Up to 8 Transmissions Up to 8 Batteries Up to 8 Fuel tanks Up to 10
Fuel Tank Configuration
The gateway can transmit fuel level information received from supported engine networks. Fuel tank capacity can be configured individually, and the device provides 12-point fuel sensor calibration for supported tanks.
MicroSD Configuration and Diagnostics
The YDEG-04N includes a MicroSD card slot for configuration, firmware updates and engine-network data recording. Device configuration is performed using a text file named YDEG.TXT stored in the root directory of the card.
- Configuration through a text file
- Firmware updates through MicroSD
- Engine network data recording
- Diagnostic data capture
- Supports FAT, FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 formatted cards
Galvanic Isolation
The NMEA 2000 interface and engine network interface are galvanically isolated at 2500 VRMS. With factory settings, the gateway does not transmit data to the engine network, helping avoid interference with normal engine-network operation.
Installation Notes
- The gateway connects directly to the NMEA 2000 backbone without a drop cable
- A dry installation location is required
- Some engine systems require a dedicated adaptor cable
- Engine network connector wiring must be verified before connection
- The engine network should be powered down during installation
- The gateway is designed for 12 V and 24 V engine networks
