Yacht Devices YDVR-04N Voyage Recorder with NMEA 2000 Micro Male Connector, MicroSD and VHF Audio Recording
The Yacht Devices YDVR-04N Voyage Recorder is designed to store data from a vessel’s NMEA 2000 network on a MicroSD memory card. It records all network traffic without analyzing it, allowing the data to be processed later on a computer for voyage reconstruction, diagnostics, logbook generation and technical analysis.
Typical recorded information can include vessel position, course, speed, water depth, water temperature, log, wind speed and direction, AIS traffic, engine data, tank levels, battery voltage and other information available on the connected onboard network. The YDVR-04N version is equipped with a connector compatible with NMEA 2000 Micro Male, DeviceNet Micro Male and Garmin NMEA 2000 Male.
Main Features
- Records all available NMEA 2000 network traffic to MicroSD card
- NMEA 2000 Micro Male connector
- Compatible with DeviceNet Micro Male and Garmin NMEA 2000 Male
- Records navigation, weather, depth, AIS, engine, tank and battery data
- Audio input for VHF, compatible speaker outputs or amplified microphones
- Standard WAV audio recording
- Supports compressed and uncompressed audio
- Automatic deletion of oldest recordings when more storage space is required
- Supports DAT and CAN recording formats
- Player mode for replaying recorded CAN traffic back to a network
- Supports NMEA 2000 and compatible 250 kbps CAN networks
- MicroSD-based configuration and firmware updates
- Compatible PC software for Windows, macOS and Linux
Recorded Network Data
The recorder stores every supported message received from the connected network unless specific filtering is configured. Depending on the equipment installed on the vessel, recorded data may include:
- GPS position
- Course
- Speed
- Water depth
- Water temperature
- Log data
- Wind speed
- Wind direction
- AIS vessel traffic
- Engine data
- Fuel tank data
- Water tank data
- Battery voltage
- Other available NMEA 2000 messages
Electrical Specifications
Parameter Specification Operating voltage 10.5–16 V from NMEA 2000 network Average current consumption 23 mA Load Equivalency Number 1 LEN Operating temperature range -25 to +85°C Weight without MicroSD card 18 g
Audio Input Specifications
Parameter Specification Audio input impedance 115 Ohm Maximum audio line-in voltage -15 to +15 V Minimum input level -200 to +200 mV Programmable audio gain -30 to +14 dB Galvanic isolation of audio input 1500 VRMS Audio format WAV Audio sampling 12 kHz, 16-bit, mono
VHF and Voice Recording
The YDVR-04N includes an audio input that can record audio from a VHF line output, a compatible low-power speaker output, or the output of a microphone amplifier. Audio files are stored in standard WAV format and can be linked to the corresponding voyage data.
A microphone can also be used with a suitable amplifier to create a voice logbook. Recorded voice entries can then be associated with the time and geographical position at which they were made.
Audio Recording Configuration
Setting Specification Audio recording ON / OFF Compression ON / OFF Factory gain 2.70 Gain range 0.03–5.00 Factory silence delay 30.0 s Silence delay range 0.50–16000.00 s Low-pass filter ON / OFF Factory activation threshold 2.50% Activation threshold range 0–50%
Audio Storage Requirements
Recording Mode Approximate Storage Use Compressed audio 0.35 MB per minute Uncompressed audio 1.4 MB per minute Typical NMEA 2000 network data 1000–2500 bytes per second
A 16 GB MicroSD card can typically store approximately 100 days of network data. The same card can hold up to approximately 32 days of continuously recorded audio depending on recording settings.
MicroSD Card Support
The recorder requires a MicroSD card for operation. Class 10 or faster cards are recommended because the device is sensitive to write and response time.
- Supports MicroSD cards of all sizes and classes
- Class 10 recommended
- Supports FAT12, FAT16, MS-DOS FAT and FAT32
- exFAT and NTFS are not supported
- Recommended cluster size: 64 KB or the largest available
- Automatic management of folders and recorded files
- Oldest recordings can be deleted automatically when space is required
Recorded File Formats
Format Function DAT Default optimized format for NMEA 2000 voyage recording CAN CAN bus recording format for playback, diagnostics and non-NMEA 2000 networks WAV Standard audio recording format
Data Filtering
The YDVR-04N can be configured to exclude selected traffic from recording.
- AIS recording can be enabled or disabled
- Individual PGNs can be blocked
- Messages from specific device addresses can be blocked
- Specific message identifiers can be filtered
- Silent mode can suppress device transmissions when required
CAN Network Support
In CAN recording mode, the recorder supports configurable CAN bus speeds and can be used beyond standard NMEA 2000 applications.
CAN Speed Option Supported 50 kbps Yes 125 kbps Yes 250 kbps Yes 500 kbps Yes 1 Mbps Yes Automatic speed detection Yes
NMEA 2000 and J1939 normally use 250 kbps. The Recorder can also work with compatible CAN networks such as J1939 and Volvo Penta EVC.
Player Mode
Player mode is intended for developers, installers and demonstration use. It allows previously recorded CAN traffic to be sent back onto a physical CAN network.
- Supports PLAYNOW.CAN and PLAY.CAN files
- Can reproduce recorded message timing
- Supports 11-bit and 29-bit CAN messages
- Supports data length from 1 to 8 bytes
- Optional continuous loop playback
PC Data Processing
Recorded data can be transferred from the MicroSD card to a computer for processing with Yacht Devices software.
- Microsoft Windows support
- macOS support
- Linux support
- GPX track generation
- CSV spreadsheet export
- Editable and printable logbook generation
- CAN file conversion and playback
- Voyage reconstruction with AIS, weather, depth and engine data
