The Yacht Devices YDPG-01R Python Gateway is a programmable marine data interface designed to connect NMEA 0183 equipment with NMEA 2000 networks while providing advanced data processing, filtering and protocol conversion through MicroPython.

The YDPG-01R version is equipped with a Raymarine SeaTalk NG-compatible NMEA 2000 connector. It also includes two serial channels for NMEA 0183 communication, a CAN bus interface and a USB Mini-B port for connection to a PC. The USB connection simultaneously provides a virtual disk for user programs and a virtual serial port with an interactive Python REPL.

MicroPython Programming

The YDPG-01R runs MicroPython, a compact implementation of Python 3 for embedded systems. The gateway includes a subset of the standard Python library together with the Yacht Devices library for NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 processing.

The internal disk contains boot.py, which initializes libraries and configures device peripherals, and main.py, which is intended for user code. These files are executed sequentially when the gateway starts.

USB Interface

The USB connection provides two interfaces simultaneously: a mass-storage device and a Virtual COM Port. The internal disk can be used for Python programs, libraries and log files, while the serial interface provides access to the interactive Python prompt for development and diagnostics.

Thonny IDE Support

The gateway can be programmed with the free Thonny IDE on Microsoft Windows, Linux and macOS. Thonny allows files to be edited directly on the gateway, provides syntax highlighting, saves backup files to the PC, runs and stops code, interacts with the REPL and plots variables.

For connection in Thonny, the interpreter should be configured as MicroPython (general) with the serial port assigned to the Python Gateway.

NMEA 0183 Interface

The NMEA 0183 interface includes separate transmit and receive channels. The factory serial speed is 4800 baud and can be changed by modifying the corresponding baudrate setting in boot.py.

CAN and NMEA 2000 Applications

The CAN interface can be used for NMEA 2000 and other compatible CAN-based networks. User programs can work with CAN bus data directly or process marine information through the Yacht Devices NMEA library.

Data Logging

The internal 16 MB flash disk can be used by user applications for data logging or streaming. This allows development of applications such as a digital logbook or collection of vessel data for custom analysis and depth mapping.

The Virtual COM Port does not require a dedicated driver in Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux or macOS. Older Windows versions require a configuration file that links the gateway to the standard system USB serial driver.

Installation

The YDPG-01R can be connected directly to the SeaTalk NG / NMEA 2000 backbone without a drop cable. The gateway can be powered from either the NMEA 2000 interface or USB.

The device should be installed in a dry location. The USB interface is not galvanically isolated from the NMEA 2000 interface, so appropriate precautions are required when simultaneously connecting the gateway to a PC and an onboard network.
