The Vetus ALU Aluminum Bolt-On Hull Anodes are designed to provide reliable cathodic protection for all metal parts underwater. These anodes are ideal for boats and yachts used in fresh water, offering an efficient way to prevent corrosion. They are made from a high-quality aluminum-indium-zinc alloy (Mil-A-24779) that meets the stringent US military technical standards (A - 18001 K), ensuring effective protection. The anodes come with pins for welding to a steel hull or bolts for fiberglass and wooden hulls. Please note that these attachment components must be purchased separately.
When ordering, it is crucial to specify the type of hull material as the anodes need to be in direct contact with the metal parts of the boat. For fiberglass boats, the bolts should be connected by a wire to ensure proper contact with the metal. This ensures that only the metal parts of the hull are protected. Additionally, all Vetus anodes are coated with a protective paint layer on the mounting side to prevent damage to the hull's surface.
Vetus aluminum anodes are highly recommended for vessels primarily operating in fresh water, as aluminum has a lower electrochemical potential than zinc, making it more effective in these conditions. Freshwater has higher electrical resistance than seawater, which makes aluminum anodes more suitable. While aluminum anodes can work in saltwater, they are consumed at a faster rate compared to zinc anodes. Magnesium anodes are not recommended, as they have an even lower electrochemical potential, which can cause damage to the boat's paint.
