Victron Energy Phoenix Battery Charger
The Victron Energy Phoenix Battery Charger is a versatile and reliable charging solution designed to meet the needs of demanding applications, including marine systems. Featuring an adaptive four-step charging system (accumulation, absorption, float, and maintenance), the Phoenix charger is engineered to optimize battery life and performance while providing advanced safety features and automatic adjustments for different battery conditions.
One of the key features of this charger is its ability to automatically adapt to the battery's charging requirements. The four-step charging process includes the following phases:
- Accumulation: The charger begins by providing a gentle charge to the battery to build up the voltage.
- Absorption: The charger applies a constant voltage while the current gradually decreases to fully charge the battery.
- Float: Once the battery is fully charged, the charger switches to a lower voltage to maintain the charge and prevent overcharging.
- Maintenance: In this mode, the charger automatically reduces the voltage to 13.2V/26.4V to prevent sulfation and corrosion of the battery's positive plates.
With a microcontroller system for adaptable control, the Phoenix charger automatically adjusts the charging mode depending on the battery’s discharge level. The charger also prevents damage due to excessive gassing through the BatterySafe mode, which automatically limits the voltage rate once gassing levels are reached, ensuring optimal charging without harming the battery.
Additional features include:
- Variable Absorption Phase Time: The charger adjusts the absorption phase time depending on the discharge level of the battery. For small discharges, the absorption time is short, while for deep discharges, it is increased to ensure a full charge.
- Storage Mode: If the battery hasn't been discharged for 24 hours, the charger reduces the float voltage to minimize gas release and plate corrosion. The voltage is increased back to absorption levels once a week to prevent electrolyte delamination and sulfation.
- Temperature Compensation: A temperature sensor ensures that the charge voltage decreases automatically as the battery temperature rises, which helps to extend battery life, especially for sealed batteries.
- Battery Voltage Sensing: An input for sensing the battery voltage compensates for voltage loss due to cable resistance, ensuring that the battery always receives the correct charging voltage.
- Computer Interface: The Phoenix charger can communicate with a computer via its RS-485 data port for configuration and monitoring. It can also be integrated into the VE.Net control network of Victron Energy or other computerized monitoring and control systems.
