The propeller is perhaps the most essential component of powered ships and sailing yachts. It requires close attention from both ship developers and propeller manufacturers. "Specialists" who are able to inform without a hitch what screw is required for your ship simply do not exist. Vetus uses a special computer program that calculates the appropriate propeller for your vessel based on its characteristics.
- Balance: The screw often rotates at 2,000 rpm (i.e. greater than 30 rpm!) and must be well balanced. Labor-intensive but necessary work.
- Dimensions: For better efficiency and to prevent vibration, the pitch of each blade must be identical and the distance between the blades is the same, which requires great accuracy in manufacturing.
- Material: Bronze is a common denominator of a wide variety of alloys. The Vetus screws are made of manganese bronze - an extremely resilient but still very flexible material. Due to the peculiarities of its material, Vetus screws can almost always be restored in case of damage. The criteria for selecting a good screw that combines all positive qualities are mentioned above and are extremely important. The diameter and pitch of the screw are almost always given in inches (1 "= 25.4 mm).
- Blade area: To find the correct screw, the screw specialist must first determine the required disk (Fa/F) ratio. Each screw has a fixed Fa/F ratio. It means the ratio of the total area of the screw circle (F) and the area of the straightened surface of all blades together (Fa). The choice of Fa/F depends on the shape of the undersea hull and the speed of the vessel.

Please give us the diameter and pitch dimensions of your screw as well as the number of blades, direction of rotation, hub and shaft dimensions according to the above figure. We can also calculate the screw for you.
Propeller shaft taper
All Vetus propellers have a standard taper of 1:10. This means that the difference between the largest and smallest diameters of the shaft hole is 10% of the length of the screw hub (D-d = 0.1 x L). If necessary, we can make a screw with a taper of 1:12, 1:16, etc. This will take a few more days and slightly increase the cost.

Vetus calculates and supplies custom screws on a special order. Standard screws are made of manganese bronze. They can be made of manganese-aluminum bronze by order or if necessary.
