What are the Coast Guard-approved requirements for fire extinguishers on boats?
The Coast Guard-approved requirements for fire extinguishers on boats specify that vessels must carry portable extinguishers classified based on fire type and size. A common requirement includes dry chemical extinguishers rated as 5-B, designed to handle flammable liquid and electrical fires. Regulations also mandate that fire extinguishers must have a clear label, be readily accessible, and equipped with a functioning nozzle, ensuring quick and effective use in emergencies.
What types of fires can a Boat Fire Extinguisher effectively combat?
Boat fire extinguishers are designed to combat specific types of fires commonly found on marine vessels. According to the classification chart, USCG-approved extinguishers are labeled as Class B and Class C, meaning they are effective against flammable liquids like fuel and grease (Class B) and electrical fires (Class C). Marine fire extinguishers must carry a UL label and be marked as 5-B, 10-B, or 20-B to ensure compliance with Coast Guard regulations.
How often should a boater check their fire extinguisher for serviceability?
A boater should check their fire extinguisher at least annually to ensure it remains serviceable and meets USCG-approved requirements. The extinguisher should have a clearly visible pressure gauge reading or indicator in the operable range, and the date of manufacture stamped on the bottle must be checked to ensure it is not older than 12 years. Additionally, fire extinguishers labeled as marine type should be securely mounted in an approved bracket and inspected for any signs of damage or leaks.
