The Type A PSS Shaft Seal operates as a mechanical face seal, where the sealing surface is established between the flat faces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is secured to the front of the bellows with hose clamps, while the rear of the bellows fits over the stern tube and is also fastened with clamps. Positioned in front of the carbon flange, the stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft and compresses the bellows before being locked in place with set screws. This pre-compression guarantees consistent contact between the rotor and flange, which helps adjust to the forward and backward movements caused by propeller thrust. Additionally, the carbon flange is designed to accommodate the shaft’s diameter, allowing it to "float" and thus mitigate misalignment and vibration issues. The rotor is sealed to the shaft using two O-rings positioned in the collar's bore, which rotate alongside the shaft and do not wear out during operation.
