PSS 02-600-800 - Dripless Shaft Seal 6", 8" Stern Tube
The PSS 02-600-800 Dripless Shaft Seal is engineered to provide reliable sealing for stern tubes, ensuring optimal performance and durability in marine applications.
The Type B PSS Shaft Seal utilizes a mechanical face seal design. At its core, the sealing surface is established between the flat surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the front side of the bellows using hose clamps, while the back end of the bellows fits snugly over the stern tube and is also secured with hose clamps. This setup allows the stainless-steel rotor to be fitted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange, where it compresses the bellows before being secured to the shaft with set screws. This pre-loading ensures constant contact between the rotor and the carbon flange, enabling the seal to effectively accommodate variable fore and aft movements due to propeller thrust.
Moreover, the carbon flange is designed with an oversized bore to allow it to "float" around the shaft, thus compensating for alignment and vibration issues. The rotor is sealed to the shaft using two O-rings that are recessed into the collar's bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and rotor, preventing wear during operation.
