The Type A PSS Shaft Seal operates as a mechanical face seal, utilizing a precise sealing surface formed between a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely fastened to the bellows with hose clamps, while the bellows itself slips over the stern tube, also secured with clamps. The rotor, mounted on the shaft, compresses the bellows, ensuring constant contact between the rotor and flange. This pre-load allows the PSS to adapt to the dynamic movement caused by propeller thrust.

Designed for flexibility, the carbon flange is over-bored to match the shaft diameter, enabling it to float and accommodate misalignment and vibration. The rotor is sealed to the shaft with two O-rings, which rotate with the assembly and are protected from wear, ensuring long-lasting performance.
