PSS 02-414-600 - Dripless Shaft Seal 4 1/4", 6" Stern Tube
The PSS 02-414-600 Dripless Shaft Seal is a state-of-the-art solution designed for marine applications, ensuring a reliable and leak-free operation. Its sophisticated engineering and robust materials provide durability and efficiency.
The Type B PSS Shaft Seal operates as a mechanical face seal. It features a sealing surface formed between the flat faces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The stationary carbon flange is attached to the front of the bellows using hose clamps, while the back end of the bellows fits securely over the stern tube, also affixed with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange and compresses the bellows prior to being secured with set screws. This pre-load compression maintains constant contact between the rotor and the flange, compensating for any variable movement caused by propeller thrust. Furthermore, the carbon flange is designed to be over-bored to the shaft diameter, allowing it to float around the shaft to accommodate misalignment and vibration issues. To ensure a tight seal on the shaft, the stainless-steel rotor incorporates two O-rings recessed into the collar's bore. Since the O-rings rotate with the shaft and rotor, they remain unaffected by wear during operation.
