PSS 02-412-634 - Dripless Shaft Seal 4 1/2", 6 3/4" Stern Tube
The PSS 02-412-634 Dripless Shaft Seal is designed to offer reliable sealing for stern tubes, ensuring optimal performance and durability in marine applications.
The Type B PSS Shaft Seal operates as a mechanical face seal, with its sealing surface formed between the flat faces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is secured to the front of the bellows using hose clamps, while the rear of the bellows fits snugly over the stern tube, also held in place by hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. It compresses the bellows, which is then secured to the shaft with set screws. This pre-loading keeps the rotor and flange in constant contact, allowing the seal to adapt to any fore and aft movement caused by propeller thrust. Moreover, the carbon flange is machined to a diameter that allows it to "float" around the shaft, effectively compensating for misalignment and vibration. The rotor is sealed to the shaft with two O-rings placed in the collar's bore, which rotate with the shaft and rotor, ensuring minimal wear during operation.
