PSS 02-400-512 - Dripless Shaft Seal 4", 5 1/2" Stern Tube
The PSS 02-400-512 Dripless Shaft Seal is designed for high-performance marine applications, providing an effective solution to prevent water ingress while accommodating movement from propeller thrust. This innovative product combines durability and functionality, ensuring reliability in demanding conditions.
The Type B PSS Shaft Seal features a mechanical face seal where the sealing surface is formed between the flat surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the front of the bellows using hose clamps, while the rear end of the bellows fits over the Stern tube, also secured with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange and compresses the bellows prior to being fixed to the shaft with set screws. This pre-load maintains consistent contact between the rotor and flange, allowing for compensation of variable fore and aft movements due to propeller thrust. Furthermore, the carbon flange is over-bored to the shaft diameter, enabling it to "float" and effectively address misalignment and vibration issues. The rotor is sealed to the shaft using two O-rings recessed into the collar's bore, which rotate with the shaft and rotor, preventing wear during operation.
