PSS 02-312-512 - Dripless Shaft Seal 3 1/2", 5 1/2 Stern Tube
The PSS 02-312-512 Dripless Shaft Seal is designed for marine applications to provide a reliable seal between the stern tube and shaft, preventing leakage and ensuring optimal performance. This advanced mechanical face seal features a unique design that accommodates movement caused by propeller thrust, making it an essential component for boat propulsion systems.
The Type A PSS Shaft Seal utilizes a mechanical face sealing mechanism, where the sealing surfaces are formed between the smooth flat areas of the rotating stainless-steel rotor and the stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange, affixed to the front side of the bellows with hose clamps, allows the back end of the bellows to fit over the stern tube, also secured by hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is positioned on the shaft just before the carbon flange. It compresses the bellows to create a pre-load that ensures consistent contact between the flat faces of the rotor and flange, allowing for adaptation to the fluctuating movements from the propeller. Additionally, the carbon flange is designed with an over-bore that allows it to "float" around the shaft, effectively compensating for misalignment and vibration issues common in marine environments. The rotor is securely sealed to the shaft using two O-rings that are recessed in the collar's bore, which rotate with the shaft and rotor to minimize wear during operation.
