PSS 02-312-434 - Dripless Shaft Seal 3 1/2", 4 3/4" Stern Tube
The PSS 02-312-434 Dripless Shaft Seal is an advanced mechanical sealing solution designed for marine applications. This innovative product ensures optimal performance and reliability under demanding conditions.
The Type A PSS Shaft Seal utilizes a mechanical face seal, generating a sealing surface through the interface of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely fastened to the front of the bellows using hose clamps, while the rear of the bellows is fitted over the stern tube and also secured with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor attaches to the shaft in front of the carbon flange. The design incorporates pre-compression of the bellows before the rotor is fastened to the shaft with set screws. This pre-load feature ensures consistent contact between the rotor and carbon flange, effectively accommodating the varying fore and aft movement caused by propeller thrust. Additionally, the carbon flange is intentionally designed with an over-bore to the shaft diameter, allowing it to "float" and compensate for misalignments and vibrations. For sealing, two O-rings are recessed into the collar's bore, rotating with the shaft and rotor without suffering wear during operation.
Operational specifications include a temperature range of 5°F to 225°F (-15°C to 107°C), a pressure limit of 15 PSI (1 BAR), and a maximum shaft RPM of 10,000 RPM. The carbon graphite sealing surface is lapped to a tolerance of 0.000044 inches, while the stainless steel and Nitronic 50 rotor face finish is polished to a Ra value of 9-12. The bellows are constructed from durable molded nitrile-PVC material.
