The Type A PSS Shaft Seal functions as a mechanical face seal, creating a sealing surface between the flat faces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely fastened to the front of a molded rubber bellows using hose clamps, while the bellows' rear end fits tightly over the stern tube, also held in place by hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft before the carbon flange and compressed against the bellows. This pre-loading maintains consistent contact between the rotor and the carbon flange, allowing the seal to adjust to any fore and aft movement caused by propeller thrust. Additionally, the carbon flange features an oversized bore that allows it to "float" around the shaft, effectively compensating for misalignments and vibrations. The rotor is sealed with two O-rings, which are recessed in the collar's bore and rotate with the shaft. This design ensures that the O-rings do not wear during operation, contributing to the longevity of the shaft seal.
