The PSS Shaft Seal utilizes a mechanical face seal mechanism, wherein the sealing interface is established between the smooth surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The stationary carbon flange is securely attached to the front of a flexible bellows by means of hose clamps, while the rear end of the bellows is fastened over the stern tube, also with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft, positioned before the carbon flange. The rotor compresses the bellows, which is then secured to the shaft using set screws. This pre-load ensures consistent contact between the flat surfaces of the rotor and carbon flange, thus allowing the PSS Seal to adapt to varying movements caused by propeller thrust. Furthermore, the carbon flange is engineered to have an over-bored diameter that allows it to “float” around the shaft, effectively addressing misalignment and vibration challenges. Sealing around the shaft is enhanced with two O-rings that are recessed into the collar's bore, rotating alongside the shaft and rotor without incurring wear during use.
