The PSS - PYI Type A PSS Shaft Seal is engineered for optimal performance as a mechanical face seal. It features a unique design where the sealing surface is formed between the smooth, flat surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the front of the bellow with hose clamps, while the rear of the bellow fits snugly over the stern tube, also secured with hose clamps. The rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange, and it compresses the bellow to ensure a tight seal.

This pre-loading maintains consistent contact between the rotor and the carbon flange, allowing the PSS to effectively manage the variable movements caused by propeller thrust. The carbon flange is intentionally over-bored to fit the shaft diameter, enabling it to "float" and adapt to misalignment and vibration, which enhances durability.

Sealing is achieved through two O-rings, which are recessed within the collar bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and rotor, ensuring they remain protected from wear during operation, thus extending the lifespan of the seal.
