PSS 02-134-212 - Dripless Shaft Seal 1 3/4", 2 1/2" Stern Tube
The PSS - PYI Type A PSS Shaft Seal offers a reliable solution for maintaining a watertight seal in marine applications. This mechanical face seal features a unique design where the sealing surface is formed between the flat surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the front of a bellow with hose clamps, while the rear end fits over the stern tube, ensuring a robust connection. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange, compressing the bellow to maintain consistent contact between the two surfaces.
This pre-load compression allows the PSS Shaft Seal to adapt to the variable movement caused by propeller thrust, ensuring optimal performance. The carbon flange is designed to float around the shaft diameter, compensating for misalignment and vibration, which is crucial for smooth operation.
Sealing is enhanced by two O-rings recessed into the collar's bore, which rotate with the shaft and rotor, preventing wear during operation. This design is engineered to withstand a temperature range from 5°F to 225°F (-15°C to 107°C) and a pressure limit of 15 PSI (1 BAR). It can handle shaft RPMs up to 10,000.
Specifications include:
- Shaft Diameter: 1 3/4"
- Stern Tube Diameter: 2 1/2" to 2 5/8"
- Uncompressed Length: 9.03" (Approx. Compression: 1")
- Rotor Diameter: 3.75"
- Stern Cuff Length: 2"
Materials used in the seal include lapped carbon graphite with a tolerance of 0.000044" and stainless steel (316SS/Nitronic 50) faced to 9 Ra, with the bellow made from molded nitrile-PVC.
