PSS 02-114-212 - Dripless Shaft Seal 1 1/4", 2 1/2" Stern Tube
The PSS - PYI Type A PSS Shaft Seal is designed to provide reliable sealing for marine applications. This mechanical face seal utilizes a sophisticated design that ensures effective performance under various conditions.
The sealing mechanism is established between the flat surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the front of the bellows with hose clamps, while the back fits over the stern tube, also secured by hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange, compressing the bellows before being fixed to the shaft with set screws.
This pre-load compression ensures constant contact between the rotor and flange, allowing the PSS to adapt to shifting movements caused by propeller thrust. The carbon flange is over-bored to the shaft diameter, enabling it to “float” and effectively counteract misalignment and vibration issues.
Two O-rings recessed in the collar bore seal the stainless-steel rotor to the shaft, rotating with it to minimize wear during operation.
