The PSS - PYI Type A PSS Shaft Seal is designed for reliable performance in marine applications. This mechanical face seal creates a tight seal through the interaction of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the front of the bellow using hose clamps, while the back end fits over the stern tube, also secured with clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft, positioned in front of the carbon flange, and compresses the bellow, ensuring a firm connection with set-screws.

This pre-load compression guarantees consistent contact between the rotor and flange, effectively accommodating the fore and aft movements caused by propeller thrust. Additionally, the carbon flange is designed with an over-bore to match the shaft diameter, allowing it to "float" and mitigate misalignment and vibrations.

Sealing is achieved through two O-rings that are recessed within the collar's bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and rotor, preventing wear during operation.
