The PSS Shaft Seal is a highly efficient mechanical face seal designed to provide reliable performance in marine applications. It operates by creating a seal between the smooth surfaces of a rotating stainless steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange, securely attached to the vessel's stern tube with hose clamps, connects to the bellows at its front side, also fastened with clamps. The stainless steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange, compressing the bellows once the collar is tightened with set-screws. This pre-load ensures continuous contact between the sealing faces, allowing the PSS to effectively manage thrust from the propeller. The carbon flange is intentionally bored larger than the shaft diameter, enabling it to "float" and adapt to misalignments and vibrations. Additionally, the stainless steel collar is equipped with two recessed o-rings that seal against the shaft, rotating in unison with the rotor, thus minimizing wear during operation.
