The PSS - PYI Type A PSS Shaft Seal is a high-performance mechanical face seal designed for marine applications. It utilizes a unique sealing mechanism that operates between a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the bellow using hose clamps, while the back end of the bellow fits over the stern tube and is also secured in place with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange, and it compresses the bellow before being fastened to the shaft with set-screws.

This pre-load compression ensures constant contact between the stainless-steel rotor and the carbon flange, enabling the PSS to effectively accommodate variations in fore and aft movement caused by propeller thrust. The carbon flange is designed to float around the shaft, thereby compensating for misalignment and vibration issues.

For optimal performance, the stainless-steel rotor is sealed to the shaft with two O-rings that are recessed within the collar's bore. These O-rings rotate with the shaft and rotor, preventing wear during operation.
