The PSS - PYI Type A PSS Shaft Seal is designed for reliable sealing in marine applications. This mechanical face seal features a unique design that ensures effective operation under various conditions.
The sealing mechanism is established between the smooth surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is securely attached to the front of the bellow with hose clamps, while the back end fits snugly over the stern tube, also secured with hose clamps. The rotor compresses the bellow before being fastened to the shaft using set-screws, maintaining a preload that ensures continuous contact between the rotor and flange. This design accommodates the shifting movement caused by propeller thrust.
Furthermore, the carbon flange is engineered to float around the shaft diameter, effectively compensating for misalignment and vibrations. Sealing is enhanced by two O-rings recessed in the collar, which rotate in unison with the rotor, minimizing wear during operation.
