The PSS - PYI Type A PSS Shaft Seal is designed to provide a reliable seal in marine applications. This mechanical face seal features a unique design where the sealing surface is formed between the flat surfaces of a rotating stainless-steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is attached to the bellow with hose clamps, while the bellow itself fits over the stern tube and is also secured with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor, mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange, compresses the bellow before being secured with set-screws.

This compression, or pre-load, ensures consistent contact between the stainless-steel rotor and the carbon flange, compensating for any fore and aft movement caused by propeller thrust. The carbon flange’s over-bored design allows it to "float" around the shaft, addressing most misalignment and vibration issues. Additionally, the stainless-steel rotor is sealed to the shaft with two recessed O-rings that rotate with the shaft, preventing wear during operation.
