The brake drive, which is used on medium and heavy trucks, has two functions. The upper housing has a spring that causes the drive rod to drop down, pushing the wedge against the rollers and pressing the brake pedal. Air pressure is required to overcome spring pressure. If there is no air pressure on the actuator, the upper part of the brake turns on, providing emergency braking. The lower part of the drive is the diaphragm, which also pushes the rod down and presses the brakes proportionally. A very light return spring pushes the wedge upwards to release the brake. The upper spring can only provide up to 60% of the braking force. The wedge mechanism consists of a wedge and rollers that push the levers away from each other to put pressure on the brake disc and give a very accurate brake torque control.
