This gas spring functions as a pneumatic muscle bundle commonly used to open and hold open doors and hatches. It relies on the pressure of compressed nitrogen gas stored inside the tube, which provides the extension force due to the pressure difference between the tube and the atmosphere. The gas moves from the higher pressure compartment to the lower through a self-cleaning valve in the piston rod, pushing the rod outward.
