Gas struts like this model are pneumatic muscle bundles primarily used for opening and keeping doors or hatches open. The extension force is generated by the pressure of compressed nitrogen gas stored inside a tube, which pushes the piston rod out through a self-cleaning valve. Each tube contains a small amount of oil for lubrication and to provide damping.

Mounting instructions: For optimal damping, mount the gas spring at a 30° angle to the vertical plane with the piston rod pointing toward the pivot point. For large opening angles, position the piston rod in the direction of the pivot point being opened for improved damping after the horizontal plane is passed.
